Hastings & Co. enjoys a rich history dating back to the early
years of Hong Kong's development as a leading international trade,
finance and commercial centre.
John Hastings (from whom the name of the firm is derived) was admitted
as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature in England on
22nd May 1885. He became the 45th solicitor to join the Roll of
Proctors, Attorneys and Solicitors practising in Hong Kong when
he was admitted on 10th November 1886 shortly after his arrival
in the territory.
In 1887, he joined the partnership of Wotton and Deacon and became
the senior partner of Deacon & Hastings in 1897.
He ventured out on his own on 1st January 1904 as Hastings, John,
Solicitor, Conveyancer, Proctor, Notary Public, Patent
and Trade Mark Agent. In 1906, George Andrew Hastings, a solicitor
and notary public, joined the firm.
By January 1907, the partnership became Hastings & Hastings.
John Hastings was one of the seven subscribers to the Articles of
Association of the Law Society of Hong Kong on 19th March 1907 and
retired 4 years later.
In 1923, with the retirement of George Andrew Hastings, the firm
was re-named Hastings & Hastings, Dennys & Bowley, and adopted
the name of Hastings, Dennys & Bowley in 1926.
The firm acquired its present name of Hastings & Co. in 1934
and the first two Chinese solicitors admitted as partners were Peter
Ping-Lam Li in November 1967 and Tony Kai-Tung Wong in April 1972.
In 1993, Hastings & Co. expanded its comprehensive coverage
to China with the opening of the Shenzhen Branch Office approved
by the Ministry of Justice of Beijing.
